Here’s a brief guide on creating product discounts in Core, including types & steps

Updated over a month ago

Product Discounts Overview

Product discounts are a great way to:

• Encourage the purchase of multiple items.

• Provide staff members with discounts on their purchases.

Discount Types in Core

  • Over Cost: This type applies a flat rate or percentage added to the wholesale cost. Note that the wholesale cost must be set for the product in Core to use this option.

  • Off Retail: This type applies a discount directly off the retail price, allowing for a straightforward percentage or dollar-based reduction for customers.

Example Transactions

10% Over Cost Discount

  • Product Y: Priced at $20.00 with a wholesale cost of $12.00.

    • Discount: 10% over cost.

    • Calculation: $12.00 (wholesale) + $1.20 (10% of $12.00) = $13.20.

    • Final Price for Staff Member: $13.20.

$3 Over Cost Discount

  • Product Z: Priced at $20.00 with a wholesale cost of $12.00.

    • Discount: $3 over cost.

    • Calculation: $12.00 (wholesale) + $3.00 = $15.00.

    • Final Price for Staff Member: $15.00.

Steps to Create a Product Discount

  • Name: Enter a descriptive name for the discount (e.g., “Staff Discount” or “Bundle Discount”).

  • Amount: Specify the discount value as a percentage or dollar amount.

  • Product Discount Type: Choose between “Over Cost” or “Off Retail” based on your pricing strategy.

  • Description: Add a short description of the discount to provide context for how it should be used or who it’s intended for.

Important Notes for "Over Cost" Discounts:

Products with No Wholesale Cost Entered

  • If an “over cost” discount is applied to a product with no wholesale cost set (or with a cost of $0.00), the system defaults to charging the normal retail price without any discount.

Discounted Price Exceeding Normal Price

  • If the calculated discounted price exceeds the product’s normal retail price, the system will charge the normal retail price instead. Example:

    • Product X: Priced at $10.00 with a wholesale cost of $8.00.

    • Discount: 33% over cost.

    • Calculation: $8.00 (wholesale) + $2.64 (33% of $8.00) = $10.64.

    • Since $10.64 exceeds the retail price of $10.00, the system charges $10.00 (normal price) instead.
