How to create your Apple Developer Account & supply the necessary information for PushPress to maintain your Branded App

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Enrolling in the Apple Developer Program is a requirement from Apple to manage your Branded App. This enables PushPress to handle essential tasks like app notices and rejection emails from Apple on your behalf. However, you are responsible for maintaining your account by staying current with updates to Apple’s terms of service and paying the annual developer fee.

Here is a list of what you’ll need to sign up for your Apple Developer Account:

  • Public business website

  • Business Email

  • Your business must be registered as a legal entity (Corporation or LLC)

  • A D-U-N-S Number from Dun & Bradstreet

  • A separate Apple ID for your Business

NOTE: If you already have an individual account, you can transfer/upgrade this to an Organization account with the directions below.

How long does this process take?

It could take up to a month but as quick as a week in some cases... depending on if you already have your D-U-N-S number or not. And if you answer the phone when Apple calls to verify who you are. Yes a real live Apple employee will call you on the phone!!

Set up a business website

  • Your business must have a publicly-available website, and the domain name must be associated with your organization. If you don’t already have a website set up, don’t worry! Contact the Grow team here and they can help get you started.

Set up a business email address

  • You'll need a custom email address with your own domain name (e.g., owner@yourcompany.com) in order to sign up for an Apple Developer account; Apple won't accept personal email addresses.

  • If you have your own website, then a custom email address may already be included as part of your website hosting plan. If this isn't the case, you can still purchase a custom address for your organization, but you'll need to use Gmail for business or a similar service.

Register your business as a legal entity

  • Your business must register as a corporation, LLC, or other type of legal entity to enroll in the Apple Developer Program.

Find your D-U-N-S® number

  • The D-U-N-S number is a unique identifier used to verify your business's identity and legal status—essentially, it shows Apple that your business is legitimate and should be permitted to publish on their platform. These numbers are automatically issued by a company called Dun & Bradstreet to eligible businesses; if you've registered as a legal entity in the past, then it's possible a D-U-N-S number has already been assigned to you.

  • You probably won't know your D-U-N-S number, or even if your business has one, and that's okay—they're free to acquire and take mere minutes to look up through the D&B website.

To find your D-U-N-S Number:

  • Look up your DUNS number through the D&B website.

  • If your business was found, select it from the list and click View/Edit Company Information (at this point, you’ll be prompted to login.)

What if my business wasn't found?

  • If your business wasn't found, you can request a D-U-N-S number directly from this page – click “Get a New D-U-N-S number").

What to expect when requesting a D-U-N-S number

  • Here's what you should know about requesting a D-U-N-S number:

    • Registering with Dun & Bradstreet is free.

    • After requesting a number, it may take up to five days to receive it from Dun & Bradstreet.

    • Note: If you've waited five days, and haven't received a reply, please contact D at (800) 234-3867 to check on the status of your request.

    • Apple provides a brief overview of this process here.

Create an Apple ID for your business

NOTE: When enrolling in the Apple Developer program, we recommend creating an Apple ID specifically for your business. This ID should be separate from your personal Apple ID, as Apple will use the linked email address to communicate updates about your app and bill your annual $99 registration fee.

To create a new Apple ID, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Create Your Apple ID page.

  • Fill out the form using your company email address and complete all required security questions.

    • Note: Apple will use this address to communicate updates concerning your app registration—be sure to check it regularly.

  • Apple will send a six-digit verification code after filling out the form. You will need to enter this code in order to complete registration.

Register with the Apple Developer Program

Note: You must enroll as an organization when registering with the program.

You will also need an Apple device such as an iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer to complete Apple's two-factor authentication process and successfully log in to their developer site.

To recap, here's what's required:

  • Your business website URL

  • The business email address you'll use to communicate with Apple

  • Your D-U-N-S number (this verifies your status as a legal entity)

  • The login information for your business's Apple ID

If you've completed all the prior steps in this article, then you're ready to enroll in the Apple

Confirm and pay for your developer account

After submitting your application, Apple will contact you within two weeks to verify enrollment. You'll then receive a confirmation email at your Apple ID email address with an enclosed link that you must use to confirm and pay for your developer membership. The cost is $99 USD.

When you receive the confirmation email, complete these steps:

  • Click the link enclosed in your email.

  • Log in to the App Store with your Apple ID.

  • Accept the terms and conditions and click Continue.

  • After confirming your info, check the Automatic Renewal option to enroll in a yearly renewal and proceed. We strongly recommend enrolling in automatic renewal. Failure to pay your annual fee on time may result in Apple pulling your app from the App Store.

  • Pay for the enrollment.

Branded App Transfer

Once your Apple Developer Account has been set up, you’ll need to email the Branded App Team (ashley@pushpress.com), the following information:

  • Apple ID (email associated with your Apple Developer Account)

  • Team ID (10 digit alpha-numeric)

  • Team Name (official name on your Apple Developer Account)

How to find the above information:

App Store Connect Terms and Agreements

Apple periodically updates its Developer Program License Agreement, requiring the account holder’s acceptance to maintain app functionality. PushPress does not receive notifications of these updates; therefore, it’s crucial for account owners to monitor their registered email for such notices. Failure to accept the updated terms can hinder the PushPress Branded App Team’s ability to update your app, potentially affecting its performance and availability.

Steps to Sign Updated Apple Developer Program Terms

  • Navigate to Agreements

    • Click on Agreements, Tax, and Banking in the main menu.

  • View and Agree to Terms

    • Find the updated terms under the Agreements section.

  • Click View and Agree to Terms.

    • Review and Accept

    • Read the terms (if you’d like 😝).

  • Check the box to agree and click Save.

Reminder: Unsigned agreements will prevent updates to your Branded App, so complete this promptly!

Free Apps Agreement

  • On the Agreements tab, find the Free Apps row, then click View and Agree to Terms.

  • Read and accept the terms, then click Agree. You can also download a copy of the agreement.

Paid Apps Agreement

  • On the Agreements tab, find the Paid Apps row, then click View and Agree to Terms.

  • Verify your legal entity information is correct in the dialog, then click Add. Enter the same information that you provided when you enrolled in the Apple Developer Program.

  • Read and accept the terms, then click Agree. You can also download a copy of the agreement.
