You may want to have a discount that only works for a single billing cycle then automatically removes itself.
Create a new discount and un-check the 'forever' box on the 'Duration' line. You can then specify how many billing cycles this will occur for.
If you don't want to create a specific discount in the "discounts" section because it's a one-off thing, for example maybe a member paid cash for a product and you didn't have change for them, you can go to their profile in Core, then, under "plans" click the 3 dots next to their plan and select "change amount/discount". You'll see the option there to "add a one-time discount" that will just take the amount you enter off of their very next bill and then set the price to whatever it was at before you created the one-time discount.
